September 2020 Ratings – Updates

*A fighter is typically removed from our ratings, if she has been inactive from her weight class for 12 months, and still has no fight scheduled. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, few fights have been taking place, so extra allowances have been given.

New Ratings Panel Members

Our ratings panel has expanded from 8 members in August 2020, to now having 10 members. The new panelists – Anthony Cocks and Blanca Gutierrez – bring with them, a huge amount of experience. Australian-based journalist, Anthony, regularly writes about the fight scene in Australia, for Max Boxing, and has contributed to Boxing Monthly, and many other online publications, for over 15 years. Blanca is heavily involved with amateur women’s boxing, with her company, “Beautiful Brawlers,” and has been working in the sport for over 20 years. She was inducted into the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019.

Atomweight

Light Heavyweight (13 competitors) and Heavyweight (20 competitors) combined have a total of 33 fighters listed on BoxRec (no fighters are ranked at Cruiserweight). Although we do not recognize Light Heavyweight, and instead have merged these two weight classes, Heavyweight still has the fewest number of fighters of any weight class in women’s boxing. Atomweight (102lbs) has a similar figure, with 38 fighters listed on BoxRec. With this in mind, it only seems fair that we also add the 102lbs weight class to our monthly ratings. Our inaugural top 5 has been included in the September 2020 ratings.

Strawweight

Last month’s #4, Alarcon, exits the top 5, and is instead now ranked at #1 at Atomweight. Katia Gutierrez exits the top 5, making way for Tina Rupperecht at #4 and Ayaka Miyao at #5.

Flyweight

Leonela Yudica’s last fight, In August 2019, ended as a “no contest,” after a clash of heads, meaning she hasn’t officially won a fight a 112lbs since December 2018 – as such, she drops to #4, resulting in Estrada, Fujioka and Mucino each moving up one place.

Welterweight

After McCaskill’s upset win over Braekhus, she enters the 147lbs list straight in at #1, pushing Braekhus, McCarter and Domini each down a place. Mary McGee exits and is now only ranked at Junior Welterweight.

Pound-For-Pound

Our overall Pound-for-Pound top 10 is now worked out by allocating points to each panelist’s top 10, and totaling the figures – so, 10 points for each panelist’s #1, 9 points for #2...1 point for #10.

On the back of her close, but this time, more convincing victory over Delfine Persoon, Katie Taylor switches places with Amanda Serrano, to take the #2 spot. Jessica McCaskill smashes into our P4P list for the first time, at #4, after her narrow points win over the bigger, previously undefeated Cecilia Braekhus. Braekhus falls just one place, to #5. Yesica Bopp drops to #8, and Jelena Mrdjenovich exits the ratings.
