Women's Monthly Rankings: December 12th, 2020
December 2020 Ratings - Updates
*A fighter is typically removed from our ratings if she has been inactive from her weight class for 12 months, and still has no fight scheduled. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, few fights have been taking place, so extra allowances have been given.
New Panel Member
We would like to welcome Inaky Arzate to our ratings panel. Boxing journalist, Inaky, currently contributes to TUDN, and has been covering the sport for over a decade. He has specialist knowledge of the Mexican fight scene.
Strawweight
Etsuko Tada chillingly knocked out last month’s #5 rated strawweight, Ayaka Miyao, in round 9 of their rematch on December 3rd, in what is a “KO of the year” candidate. Tada switches places Yokasta Valle to take the #2 spot. Miyao exits, getting replaced by Katia Gutierrez. Anabel Ortiz’ last fight was at junior bantamweight, but she is still currently recognised as a reigning titlist at strawweight by the WBA, so for the time being at least, she will remain in our 105lbs rankings.
Junior Bantamweight
Although Jorgelina Guanini lost to Rachel Ball, as a late replacement for Ebanie Bridges, this fight was well above the junior bantamweight limit (Guanini weighed 125.5lbs). When fully prepared there is nothing to suggest Guanini cannot make 115lbs and it is likely she’ll be soon back to defend her IBF belt.
Junior Featherweight
Daniela Bermudez enters at #1 following her 10th round stoppage of Cintia Castillo on December 4th, in which she won the IBF strap. Marcela Acuna drops to #2, and Yamileth Mercado, whose last bout was at featherweight, exits the top 5. Fatuma Zarika exits, and Jackie Nava replaces her at #5.
Junior Lightweight
Terri Harper’s impressive KO of Thanderz, means she climbs above Mikaela Mayer, to #2.
Lightweight
Rose Volante re-enters the rankings (at #5) after winning her first fight since the Katie Taylor loss in 2019. Miriam Gutierrez, who lost to Taylor last month, exits.
Heavyweight
Danielle Perkins enters at #5 after knocking out Princess Hairston, pushing Laura Ramsey out of the top 5.
Pound-For-Pound: Our overall Pound-for-Pound top 10 is now worked out by allocating points to each panellist’s top 10, and totalling the figures – so, 10 points for each panellist’s #1, 9 points for #2...1 point for #10.
Claressa Shields still received votes for the #1 position from our panellists, but Katie Taylor’s utter domination of top 5 ranked Miriam Gutierrez was enough to tip things in her favour, and knock the American off the top spot,
Maiva Hamadouche, Mikaela Mayer, Yulihan Luna Avila, Yesenia Gomez, and Jelena Mrdjenovich also received votes.
